There would be a legitimate argument over who was the rightful owner of the Heart-Pot, given that it spent time in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia before ending up in Niger. In the alternate time-line of my novel, the main rival to the West African Confederation would be the fictional Nile Caliphate. There is a back-story that I decided to leave out of this version of the novel, and that is the leader of the Nile Caliphate did send a bidder to try to secure the Heart-Pot, but Comandante Foxtrot anticipated that move and made sure everything was in place to make the winning bid and legalize the purchase on the spot.

Of course, these days, it is considered the correct thing to return looted artefacts back to their county of origin. Just last year, a museum in London returned its Benin bronzes back to Benin, from where they had been taken in the nineteenth century.
