Chapter 39: Smackdown
The evening of Monday following the stakeout, Kaitlyn came over to my house. After getting settled, she said, “So, I saw Ranger Ed coming out of our boss’s office looking rather peeved this afternoon.”
“Ah?” I said, a bit apprehensive. “What happened then?”
“Well, he just kind of glared at me, then walked off, so after he’d gotten out of eyeshot, I got up and walked into Sherry’s office to see what happened. Oh, she does insist on me calling her by her first name now, ever since we exchanged our skinny-dipping stories!”
“Well, that’s good. So, what’d she say?”
“She just told me that she told Ed to stay away from me, that he was lucky not to be fired for harassing another employee. That she’d heard the straight story from the responding officer, and that she’d let the courts take it from here, but if it spilled over into the office again, he’d be out of a job. She told him to stay away from me, and that as far as she was concerned, it was as good as a restraining order, that I could tell her any time Ed approached me again, and she’d handle it.”
“Cool! Well, let’s hope that’s the end of it, then,” I said. Then I added, “I guess he’s out on bail now?”
“I guess. Officer Poulsen relayed through Sherry that we can expect a summons for The Goat’s trespassing trial at some point,” Kaitlyn replied. “He also told her about our help in the bike theft bust on Saturday night. Between that and the good words coming back from the geologist on our coal mining meeting, I’m well into her good graces at the moment.”
“Aw, that’s wonderful, Kaitlyn!”
“And I’m learning to become a mage besides,” she said, wonderingly. “And I’ve got a great guy now…” she just looked at me, lovingly, so I slid over on the couch to snuggle up with her.
“And the sex is awesome,” I supplied.
She blushed a bit and said, a bit exasperated, “Yes, yes, and the sex is awesome, too!”
Then I dove for a neck kiss, making her giggle. It went pretty rapidly from there. We didn’t make it out to the back yard again that night. We didn’t even have to talk about it. We’d stick to the bed for now. That’s fine. We were awfully good in bed even without the Earth magic. I still credit Gaia for it: we knew each other deeper now than many couples after a year.
With that realization, I knew what I had to do.
