This is an excellent addition to the site Dave to help keep the authors and their stories visible on the front page. I’m going to sticky this. Thanks.
I hoped you would like it. Sticky – that’s perfect, thanks!
Great addition to the site!!!
Thank you, Dave, for the extra promotion. Had I used this site more frequently back in April I may have thanked you earlier. Wow, I can’t believe I wrote A Powerful Lesson all the way back then. I should write more frequently here 🙂
We can only hope. 🙂
I’ve updated the list and increased the size from 10 to 20. So it’s the most Recently Active 20 Writers now, and I’ve condensed it to make space for the extra writers. Let me know if there are any mistakes, issues or the order is incorrect.
Dave, I think you’ll need to update this list. I don’t know why, but unfortunately Barelin removed all of her stories from here.
Somehow, I missed this message Underdog. Yes, not sure why the chapters were removed, and now some are getting reposted. I like new chapters, but not lots of very short chapters posted in a way that pushes everyone else off the front page. How about if a story is multi chapter, we try to combine all these little chapters into 45-60 minute chunks? ie: Culture Clash is less than 2 hour story, and yet it’s spread out into 8 postings. Most being 7-12 minutes. Like for example, I would prefer to see Culture Clash being just 2 postings (chapters 0-3, and 4-8). Especially if the story is already all written, don’t post it spread out all over the place. It’s probably not fair if one story pushes 7 other stories off of the front page, right? Or what does everyone think about this? Keeping in mind, that we appreciate barelin’s stories – we are only talking about best practices for posting small chapters. A rule for everyone. So let’s talk about it. Sometimes a good discussion can lead to good ideas.
I totally agree with you. Also, it would be better, in my opinion, if the “Recent Chapter” box mentioned the story names besides the chapter names (like what you see in BPClavel stories, for example). That way, we would immediately know to which story they belong to.
Dave,
Like Underdog, I agree. I wouldn’t want anyone to think that their stories aren’t valued, but that’s not what you are talking about. You are simply proposing that stories be posted in larger chunks such that more stories fit on the front page. That benefits everyone — greater visibility of what is available.
Underdog,
Thank you for noticing and commenting on how my postings include both story and chapter name. I’ve always imagined that it’s helpful — making it easier for readers to find what they are looking for. It’s really up to each writer. Each chapter simply needs to be posted that way. Fortunately the site allows edits. I went through a bit of trial and error before I got it to the point that I was happy with it.
Best Regards,
Blair
Yeah, I don’t like for one story to suddenly take up most of the boards 18 front page slots unfairly. So I’m going to propose a new posting rule to Kinsey. Max 2 posts per week, per writer. If the writer wants to post more than that, then they can shove all the little chapters into those two posts. This will protect fairness on the board and prevent the 2-3 writers that sometimes power-blast everyone off the front page, letting just their one story dominate the entire front page. That’s all we need. That one little rule. Then this board will be more enjoyable for all. More story selections on front page for readers to choose from. Plus it’s still a fair amount for one writer. In a month a writer can post 8 times. Since the front page only holds 18 slots, that’s plenty enough for one writer in a month.
Dave,
Solid! That sounds quite workable. Until you suggested this, I had no idea how you might manage some sort of limit. And what is really nice about this, is that a writer (any of us) can still post a large quantity — lots of words — it just needs to be done in larger posts (potentially multiple chapters) rather than broken up in to multiple short postings. As I see it, that’s better for readers as well. A lot of short, free-standing posts can be confusing. If it’s the same story, then post it as such. That’s my take.
Blair
I agree as well. With larger postings, it is easier to keep an overview. And it is fair to other authors, they don’t get pushed off the frontpage.
It’s official. We got a pass on this rule proposal from Kinsey. So starting tomorrow there will be a maximum of 2 posts per week allowed on the site, per person.
That however, is hardly a limitation. For those that like to post once a day you can do a CountryMouse did and just keep adding to the same post. If anyone wants to go that route, I can make a special mention of it in this ‘Recently Active Writers’ section. Otherwise 2 post a week are plenty and will keep everyone happy. It will also be less work for me to update this ‘RAW’ section. And for those that like to post after something is complete, you can simply bundle more chapters together, or spread out your posting more. This will allow for more commenting as people wait for the next post.
This website is great for what we use it for, but it also has limitations, so I’m glad that we can agree to work around them. A special thanks to barelin for already combining her last post into a larger post. Happy posting everyone.
The site guidelines has been updated with the “2 posts per week,” rule. I agree that it is needed for the time being until I can come up with a better technical solution.
Thanks Kinsey. I regret that I don’t have time these days to look into it, even though I know very little about web development or php, it’s easy to imagine simple solutions to this. Like the recent chapters section could instead be a ‘recent writers’ section with each author name accompanied by their most recent chapter. This would effectively automate the recently active writers section. Likewise the comments section needs a paging mechanism of at least a few pages. Or alternatively, recent stories instead of recent chapters (but that would only work if people grouped the chapters properly, not everyone does that). I think we will get there eventually, assuming the base code (and database) isn’t too bad to work with.
When I started posting ‘Nustock Body Freedom’ I was letting chapter length be determined by the needs of the content. Hence chapter 1 was quite short and chapter 2 was more than twice as long, well over an hour. Then seeing how the ‘reading time’ worked out I removed half of chapter 2 and created a new chapter for the second part, and kept more material back for later. Actually I think this has improved the story by switching from one of the main characters to the other usually alternating them.
What sort of time do people like to have in one go?
Now I know that long chapters are ‘OK’ I won’t make them too short. This whole story is quite long and is still developing although the whole main structure is already written. I hope people like it.
On the topic of recent activity, I have now finished migrating older stories while respecting the 2 per week rule. There was only 3 I didn’t bring over. Two that I don’t think quite fit the site, and the other hits a snag on the rules because it’s partially a collaboration. But other than those, I’ve brought all things Anon ENF Fan here to NFics! From this point on, anything from me will be fresh from my brain!
Unfortunately, it seems author LindaBare deleted their stories and profile here.
